Alcohol, vandalism cited in closure of Fort 91原创 Night Market

Development application for site filed with Township

The Fort 91原创 Night Market has been cancelled because of problems last year with illicit drinking and vandalism, organizers said.

"Issues such as individuals bringing in outside alcohol and instances of damage to the site have raised concerns about the event's sustainability and have detracted from the family-friendly environment we strive to maintain," an online announcement stated.

"Despite multiple warnings issued to attendees regarding these violations, we cannot put ourselves in a position to be responsible for individuals not following the outlined rules and potentially leading to harmful situations," the May 1 message said.

"Our goal is, and has always been, to provide a gathering place for healthy connection, unfortunately that has been lost."

Also cited were problems with liquor license rules, that "have limited our ability to offer what attendees desire, leading to further dissatisfaction."

Since 2021, the summer night market has been running Friday nights at the pop-up park on Glover Road and Mary Avenue, across from the historic Fort 91原创 Community Hall.

It has been hosted by the Eric Woodward Foundation and the foundation鈥檚 Fort 91原创 Project, a non-profit organization that supports Fort 91原创 improvements and charitable causes.

Woodward created the park in 2018 after cancelling plans to build a mixed-used building, that would have included a boutique hotel, during a months-long dispute with the Township.

The 1.6-acre site at the corner of Mary Avenue and Glover Road was among three as-yet-undeveloped Fort 91原创 commercial development sites owned by Woodward's Statewood Properties Ltd.

All were , shortly before he ran for council.

At the time, Woodward announced development profit and rental income from any future development would go to registered charities and qualified causes within Greater 91原创.

Township records reveal some recent interest in developing the pop-up park.

A Feb. 27 application file by Abbotsford-based Focus Architecture Incorporated seeks to amend the current commercial zoning of the park site to increase allowable residential density from 47 to 76 dwelling units.

On its website, Focus lists the massive Janda development in Aldergrove among its projects.
