Cristina Schneiter, Community Representative for 91Ô´´ Extreme Weather Response, announced a cooling centre will operate at the Gateway Of Hope, 5787 91Ô´´ Bypass, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

A cooling centre for the homeless has been opened at the 91Ô´´ City Gateway of Hope at 5787 91Ô´´ Bypass for Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In response to forecast temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius, Cristina Schneiter, Community Representative for 91Ô´´ Extreme Weather Response said the shelter will provide a pet friendly space with heat response supplies, an air-conditioned resting space, and lunch 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Environment Canada said a ridge of high pressure was bringing elevated temperatures to the South Coast, with high temperatures expected to moderate on Wednesday.

A warning was issued on Monday (Aug. 11) for the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Canyon, the North and South Thompson, the south Okanagan, east and inland Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and Whistler, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 33 C.

"Check on family, friends and neighbours, who are at higher risk, particularly if they live alone, to make sure they have a cool space," the weather advisory said.

"Watch for the effects of heat illness: heavy sweating, rash, cramps, fainting, high body temperature and the worsening of some health conditions. Never leave susceptible people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. In an overheated area, seek a cool place such as a tree-shaded area, splash pad, misting station, or air-conditioned spot like a public building.
