91原创 Good Times Cruise-In director Marty Brown said his love affair with cars began young.

鈥淚 have been car crazy since being in diapers, and I will be car crazy until I鈥檓 in diapers again,鈥 he said.

His love of vehicles 鈥 including Chevrolet Impalas and GMC pickups 鈥 has led him to learn skills and meet a lot of great people through the years, Brown said.

It also led him to be a Cruise-In director twice, first about a decade ago, and now returning for his second stint in the job.

Brown remembered the first time he attended Cruise-In, in 2009, when it was still taking place in downtown 91原创 City.

His first impression was of the sheer magnitude of the car show, which at the time was already drawing tens of thousands of spectators and more than a thousand cars.

鈥淚 was seriously impressed that it was giving back to the community,鈥 he said.

Cruise-In is a volunteer-run event, and its proceeds go back to local charities every year.

Brown knew some folks who were involved in the show, so after his first attendance he started in a minor role. He quickly moved on to bigger responsibilities.

That鈥檚 pretty common with Cruise-In, he said, where you can get exposure to what it takes to run such a big show from an operational standpoint.

One of his responsibilities was the marketplace, which has evolved and changed through the years, adding more vendors and becoming a show on itself.

Brown took a break from the busy schedule of Cruise-In for a few years, but kept in touch with Cruise-In president Riccardo Sestito.

He brought up a few suggestions to Sestito for things he thought the car show could try.

Sestito suggested that if his ideas were so good, he should do them himself.

He was brought in again, this time as director of events.

鈥淚t has been a respectable amount of work,鈥 Brown said.

His big responsibility this year is the Hand Over A Jeep contest, where one of 40 people can win a year-long lease and insurance on a brand-new Jeep Cherokee, if they can keep their hand on it longer than any of the other 39 contestants.

One of his other projects is a remote-control vehicle area, in partnership with local store RC Pitstop, which will see demonstrations of miniature four-wheel-drive vehicles.

As for his own vehicles, Brown said that as a young man, his goal was to one day own a 1965 Impala. When he was 15, he set out to find one in his price range that he could fix up.

Unfortunately, his price range wasn鈥檛 wide enough.

He wound up buying a 1959 Volkswagen Beetle, instead.

鈥淨uite different from an Impala,鈥 he noted.

But it was an amazing car, that he fixed up and worked on for years.

More recently, he鈥檚 worked on a lot of Chevy trucks, including a bright red 1968 Chevrolet K20 four-wheel-drive model that has just under 15,000 original miles on it.

Originally a firefighting truck in a state park in Northern California, it still runs like a brand new vehicle, he said.

But for this year鈥檚 Cruise-In, he鈥檚 bringing another car.

鈥淚 finally got an Impala this year,鈥 said Brown.

It鈥檚 a 1963, however. Just like when he was 15, a 1965 model is 鈥渘ot in the budget at the moment.鈥
