A 91原创-based animal rescue has expanded its international efforts to save street dogs from dire conditions.
Just Four Paws recently brought three eight-week-old puppies from the streets of San Juan Cosal谩, a small town in Jalisco, Mexico, to B.C. for adoption.
Named Alvin, Simon, and Theodore after the movie Alvin and the Chipmunks, the littermates were discovered running unsupervised. Founder Nikki DeSousa said that the first step is to ensure the puppies鈥 health.
Before bring brought to Canada they will need to be up-to-date on shots, worming, rabies, and neutering. Each puppy will undergo veterinary diagnostic SNAP testing to screen for diseases like canine parvovirus and distemper, which are common in the region.
The puppies will also receive full veterinary exams, vaccinations, and flea and tick prevention. They will then be able to be legally transported to Canada.
While the puppies aren鈥檛 available for adoption just yet, DeSousa said their profiles will be posted in the coming weeks. Potential adopters may apply early if they鈥檙e willing to secure a permit to bring them into Canada prior to entry age for a pre-neuter adoption.
Since 2020, Just Four Paws has rescued over 2,700 animals, including dogs, cats, and even goats, across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico through a dedicated network of volunteers. The organization is now expanding its outreach in Mexico, particularly in a 13-town region in Jalisco that lacks a rescue shelter. DeSousa hopes for some exciting news by the end of August.
While the rescue work is successful, it also comes with emotional weight.
"Abuse, neglect and homeless dogs are hard on the heart,鈥 said DeSousa. 鈥淲e can only do so much, help only when we can."
The puppies鈥 journey will be posted on Just Four Paw's Instagram and Facebook, as they prepare to find safe and loving homes in the coming weeks.
