91原创-based university fasttracks learning for brewing, engineering programs

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is offering students a new fast lane to careers in science.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is offering students a new fast lane to careers in science or making beer.

Starting this fall, new credentials will be offered in the brewing and physics programs, giving students the option of completing shorter terms of study.

鈥淎 traditional four-year degree may not adequately address the diverse needs of today鈥檚 learners,鈥 said Amy Jeon, dean pro tem of the Faculty of Science at KPU. 鈥淭hese new student-centered programs offer multiple entry and exit points, providing greater flexibility and empowering students to choose a path that fits their needs while maintaining a continued sense of progress.鈥

The new one-year Certificate in Brewing is designed to meet the needs of students who may find the current two-year Diploma in Brewing and Brewery Operations a significant time commitment.

鈥淭he Certificate in Brewing gives students a strong foundation in the science of brewing, along with valuable hands-on experience in KPU鈥檚 state-of-the-art, award-winning teaching brewery,鈥 said Dominic Bernard, a brewing instructor and program chair. 鈥淭o further support student flexibility, we鈥檝e also introduced four micro-credentials 鈥 in brewing, brewing science, beer sensory evaluation, and the business of brewing. All of these initiatives aim to give students more options in the education they wish to pursue.鈥

The new credential could appeal to students seeking a shorter path to a job in the brewing industry.

鈥淎fter gaining practical skills through shorter programs, students may choose to take a break, gain work experience in their field, and return to continue their studies later 鈥 with meaningful credentials that reflect the time and effort they鈥檝e already invested,鈥 Jeon explained.

The new Diploma in Engineering Physics offers an open-admission, two-year program that complements KPU鈥檚 existing Engineering First-Year Certificate and provides a direct pathway into the Bachelor of Science in Physics for Modern Technology.

鈥淭he Diploma in Engineering Physics provides a stepping stone for any student wishing to pursue a degree in engineering, physics or math, or to enter the science and technology workplace,鈥 said Dr. Michael Poon, chair of Engineering. 鈥淲ith a curriculum that integrates theory and practical application, small class sizes and dedicated teaching faculty, KPU students will gain the knowledge and skills for success along their STEM career pathway.鈥

The diploma includes transferrable second-year courses and supports part-time study, making it ideal for working students and international applicants. Unlike one-year certificates, it also qualifies international graduates for work permits.

Both programs are part of KPU鈥檚 broader commitment to applied, hands-on education in science and technology. The Faculty of Science already offers a range of programs for students to choose from, including seven bachelor degrees, five diplomas, two associate degrees and two certificates.
