Crayons, cookies and creativity from R.C. Garnett Demonstration Elementary students are helping animals.
Two classes of students, about 45 kids in total, drew butterflies which were then turned into greeting cards that the kids sold.
鈥淭he kids ended up selling over 1,800 cards,鈥� said Grade 3 teacher Jennifer Jacobson.
The Grade 3 and 3/4 classes also had a bake sale and the efforts meant a $1,450 donation to the BC SPCA.
鈥淭he idea sparked from a student in Mrs. [Kaitlin] Burns class who loves animals and decided she wanted to help the SPCA,鈥� Jacobson explained. 鈥淭his then spread throughout Mrs. Burns class and then to the rest of the students and together we decided it would be awesome to see what we could do to help.鈥�
Brooklyn Saumier, Grade 4, has a dog and some pet fish, and it was her enthusiasm that got the project off the ground.
鈥淚 like animals, and I think they all deserve a home,鈥� she said.
Grade 3 student Sebastien Campbell liked being part of the project because it was a way 鈥渢o help animals.鈥�
An SPCA volunteer spoke to the students about caring for animals and that sparked the idea to visit a shelter so the students could see what happens to unwanted and abandoned animals. They visited the Surrey facility and then got started on their fundraising. [91原创 Township and City contract the 91原创 Animal Protection Society to provide animal bylaw enforcement and pound services. LAPS also provides the shelter for animals. The SPCA does not have a facility in 91原创 but is responsible for animal welfare investigations in this community.]
鈥淲e are so proud of the students鈥� hard work,鈥� Jacobson said.
