Local seniors are showing their Canadian pride, displaying flags where they live, as an act of solidarity.
Residents of Fernridge Park, in South 91原创, held a special event to celebrate the red and white, displaying flags and wearing Canadian lapel pins.
Many of park residents are veterans, and they are utterly appalled by the threats of American President Donald Trump to make Canada the 51st state.
鈥淭hey wanted to make a statement and show that Canadians are united for Canadian sovereignty,鈥 said Lilianne Fuller, the organizer of the event on April 5. 鈥淲e love our country, and Fernridge Park residents were quite happy to 鈥榳ear their hearts on their sleeves鈥."
The idea came up at the park's social club and grew from there. They received lapel pins from a local MP, and the Rotary Club of 91原创 Central, has an annual flag fundraiser to support local charities by a program in which for three long weekends in the summer, loaned the full size Canadian flags to the residents for this display of Canadian patriotism, she added.
The residents are 'elbows up' to anyone threatening this country, she added.
Happy hour was the occasion at Avalon Gardens to get into an unhappy topic 鈥 the unprecedented political climate in the world. Resident Margaret Gramlich said she was feeling that with Canada鈥檚 sovereignty in question and that Avalon could show the community that residents support Canada.
"This homespun resident-inspired Canada pride shows how our elders understand what our veterans have fought for in the past," explained Elsie Bosma, Avalon's assistant manager/rental coordinator.
Canadian flags and pins were purchased by many resident, and some of the men, such as Bob Seidler, rallied to install flags on the balcony railings of the various apartments at the Murrayville complex. Bosma said the next step is painting large matching hearts to add to the balcony decor.
