91Ô´´'s last bowling alley still rolling after 63 years

Alder Alley was built in 1962 off Fraser Highway in Aldergrove

Built in 1962, 91Ô´´'s oldest and only bowling alley is still rolling around in downtown Aldergrove.

The building was constructed by Jack and Dorothy Scott on their property, their house was just east of the bowling alley.

Jack was a longtime member of the Aldergrove Volunteer Fire Department, and the previous owner of J.E. Scott Motors – which he later sold to Elmer and Ann Quiring.

He wanted to focus on the bowling alley (then called Alder Lanes), since it was very much a family-run business with his wife and two daughters.

The Scotts were well known for their work on the Aldergrove Fair board, which Jack chaired for 10 years. He was also an integral part of getting the new fire hall built in 1958-59.

As members of the Aldergrove Bowling League in Abbotsford for seven years, they wanted to build their hometown's own bowling alley.

For Jack, it was "a dream come true," according to an article by The Star in 1962.

"He had visions of opening the first bowling alley in Vernon back in 1939, but they did not materialize then," it reads.

In his interview, Jack said now his dream has come true in Aldergrove.

Jack passed away suddenly in December that year, but Dorothy lived in Aldergrove for many years before moving to Kamloops. She passed away in 1999, and the couple is buried together in the Aberdeen Cemetery.

It was initially built with six lanes, but in the 1970s four more lanes were added to make it the 10-lane, five-pin bowling alley it is today.

Now, the bowling alley is managed by Troylena Oliver following five generations that have worked and bowled there.

Although Alder Alley is the last bowling alley in 91Ô´´, Oliver said there is still a steady flow of business.

"As a sport it isn't as popular as it use to be, but since so many other bowling alleys have closed we have bowlers that come from all over," she said.

is located at 27070 Fraser hwy., and is open Tuesday 4 to 10 p.m., Thursday 4 to 6:30 p.m., Friday 4 to 11 p.m., Saturday noon to 11 p.m. with Glowbowl all day, and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.

An adult league plays Tuesday and Thursday evening, and those interested can call 604-856-2034.

The other bowling alley in 91Ô´´, Willowbrook Lanes, closed in 2017 after operating for 36 years.
