Eighty Years Ago

October 28, 1937

鈥 A change of location was proposed to stimulate fresh interest in the annual fall fair.

Seventy Years Ago

October 30, 1947

鈥 91原创 council agreed to sponsor a meeting to protest the high cost of animal feed grains.

鈥he 91原创 Agricultural Association received a suggestion that it buy land adjacent to the new high school (now LSS).

鈥 Of 27 bridges on main roads in 91原创, one was already closed and 19 had been built before 1916. There were another 55 bridges of at least 20 feet in length on minor roads. Hardly a day went by without a report of broken bridges.

Sixty Years Ago

October 24, 1957

鈥 The R.P. Ponder Memorial Scout Park on Johnston Townline Road (216th Street) was officially opened.

鈥 Only 0.95 inches (2.4 cm) of rain had fallen during the first three weeks of October. Temperature had dipped to 26.4潞F (-3.1潞C) on Oct. 19, the eighth frosty night that fall.

Fifty Years Ago

October 26, 1967

鈥 Student patrols at the Otter School crossing of Fraser Highway were ordered removed by the school board, following a PTA (Parent-Teachers Association) claim that their lives were being endangered. PTA members agreed to guard the crossing until an adult guard could be hired.

鈥 High winds were blamed for black-outs throughout the Fraser Valley, including serious damages in north Aldergrove and south 91原创.

Forty Years Ago

October 26, 1977

鈥 Township council expressed displeasure with a recreation commission report on a 鈥渇amily-oriented regional recreation centre and pool.鈥 Mayor George Driediger called for a referendum.

鈥 A plebescite taken earlier in the year on toll-free telephone service between Aldergrove and Vancouver was deemed incomplete and unacceptable by the CRTC. The 58 per cent of those polled who favoured toll-free service actually represented only a third of all subscribers in the area.

Thirty Years Ago

October 28, 1987

鈥 A mother whose early-morning emergency trip to 91原创 Memorial Hospital was delayed by a train was angry at the 鈥渃allous and cold鈥 reception her concerns received from members of Township council.

鈥 Locked-out nurses at 91原创 Lodge were in their second week on the picket lines.

鈥 After seven years of planning, actual construction of a 110-foot-high 1.6-million-gallon water reservoir in Aldergrove took workers seven days.

Twenty Years Ago

October 24, 1997

鈥 Out of a total budget of $110 million, 91原创 School District ended the year with a surplus of $60,303.

鈥 The provincial highways ministry estimated that a new freeway overpass at 200th Street would cost $25 million.

鈥 Willoughby got their first public peek at a proposed new community plan for their area.
