Eighty Years Ago

June 2, 1938

鈥 The 91原创 Agricultural Assocation donated the old fair grounds at Milner to the municipality, on condition that the land return to its original donor or estate if the property was used for anything other than parkland or fair grounds.

Seventy Years Ago

June 3, 1948

鈥 Floods swept through the Fraser Valley, causing millions of dollars in damages. A sudden rise in the Fraser River the previous Tuesday heralded the emergency. Volunteer efforts to strengthen the dikes had gone for naught. At 4 a.m. on Friday, the water, whipped by a strong wind, tore a 30-foot hole in the Fort 91原创 Dyke on the J.J. McLellan farm in Glen Valley.

Sixty Years Ago

June 5, 1958

鈥 Several hundred children and adults passed through the Centennial Caravan during its stops in 91原创 and Aldergrove.

鈥 Local strawberry farmers protested the dumping of U.S. berries on the local market at 15陆垄 per pound.

鈥 Five Brookswood teenagers treed and shot a 40-pound porcupine.

Fifty Years Ago

June 6, 1968

鈥 First artificial insemination of a horse in B.C. was carried out on Harry Milner鈥檚 Clydesdale mare, Judy, at 23633 Fraser Highway, using frozen semen from California.

Forty Years Ago

June 7, 1978

鈥 About 150 people took part in the 91原创 Arts Council鈥檚 second annual Home Tour, visiting artistically and creatively designed and decorated homes.

鈥 A handful of young people appeared before 91原创 City Council, to speak out against the raising of the 11 p.m. curfew age limit to 16.

Thirty Years Ago

June 1, 1988

鈥 A search for two toddlers in Fort 91原创 ended tragically. Hundreds of residents searched, but the two were found dead, suffocated in the freezer of an ice cream bicycle in one of the boys鈥 backyard.

鈥 A public meeting was held to discuss the future of Douglas Park. City councillor and parks and recreation chairman Gene MacDonald said the call for public input was in response to recent controversy over the City鈥檚 intent to turn the ballpark into a 鈥減assive park.鈥

Twenty Years Ago

June 5, 1998

鈥 The federal government鈥檚 point man on national unity, Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Stephane Dion, was scheduled to speak at a coffee meeting co-hosted by the 91原创 Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown 91原创 Merchants Association.

鈥 Two children, one just short of his fourth birthday and the other 18 months old, perished in a mobile home fire in the Livingston area.

鈥 Brookswood Secondary teacher Dawne Tomlinson received the Prime Minister鈥檚 Award for Teaching Excellence from the hand of PM Jean Chretien himself.
