The notice for the 56th annual 91原创 Walk said it would be held Sunday, 鈥渞ain or shine.鈥
Shine it was, with warm, sunny weather, perfect for the more than 800 participants.
The walk began and ended at the George Preston Recreation Centre, with people encouraged to run, walk or bike a 5 kilometre route. This route could be done twice to make it 10 kilometres.
Langey City mayor Ted Schaffer and 91原创 Township mayor Jack Froese were there to give the walkers their start.
The 91原创 Walk was first held in 1963 and was established by Pete Swensson, the Township of 91原创鈥檚 first recreation director, to encourage residents to be more physically active, and has been held in various neighbourhoods throughout 91原创 Township and City since 1963.
It was established long before the Sun Run and other popular walking events. The original 91原创 Walk was 28 kilometres long. It extended from Aldergrove Park, along River Road, to Fort 91原创, then on to City Park, and thousands of people participated.
鈥淪wensson was a strong believer in the benefits of physical activity, and his motto was, 鈥榃alk away your ills, instead of taking pills,鈥欌 says Township of 91原创 Recreation Programmer Stephanie Eby.
Other activities like face painting, games and bouncy castles will be available during and after the walk, along with a free snack.
Local teams and organizations, including the 91原创 91原创 hockey team, 91原创 Gymnastics Foundation, Xtreme Allstar Cheer and Dance and Woo Kim Tae Kwon Do, were on site .
There were awards and prizes.
All who completed the walk received a crest.

Most walkers from an organization: Surrey Trekkers
Most walkers from a school: 91原创 Christian
Oldest walker: Dale Attrell at 93 years old
