Two 91原创 animal shelter workers, plus 12 donors and a 3,500 km journey carried out over 48 hours equals six beautiful puppies arriving in 91原创 to find their forever homes, said LAPS executive director Jayne Nelson.

Nelson, along with fellow LAPS staff member Alicia Santella made the 鈥渆pic road trip鈥 to a First Nations community outside of Wadena, Sask. two weeks ago to rescue the homeless puppies that needed care before winter set in.

With help from donations from this community, across Canada and even one donor from the U.S., Nelson and Santella made the road trip after hearing from a resident in the Saskatchewan community about the puppies in dire need.

鈥淥ur kind citizen contacted us a few weeks ago, letting us know that there were many puppies in need of homes. So we arranged to go to Saskatchewan to pick up 13 puppies and give them a ride to a new life in B.C.,鈥 said Nelson.

鈥淲hen we arrived we were crushed to learn that seven of the babies and their mothers had wandered away. In spite of much searching, the caregivers were unable to locate them for us to bring home. We are staying in touch and will do our best to get the rest of the babies here,鈥 she said.

They were successful in bringing six puppies back with them.

All the puppies have adoption applications pending, said Nelson.

But before they left Saskatchewan, the puppies were examined at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, where they were vaccinated and treated for parasites (worms, fleas and lice.)

The puppies are a blended family of two different litters and one older puppy that turned up as a stray. 鈥淪he was fed and cared for by kind people who were feeding the other puppies,鈥 said Nelson.

鈥淚t is a really good feeling to be able to help in some small way.鈥

And because of the dire need there, Nelson may do another run to Saskatchewan to bring home some other pups.

Puppies are not often available at shelters in Metro Vancouver.

Nelson sent out a 鈥榟uge鈥 thank you to all of the people who made the rescue mission possible.

The selected applicants go through a phone interview and then the chosen new family has to go go through training sessions through LAPS.
