Seniors’ Week 2023 is a busy time in 91ԭ City

Learn how to use new tech, try out the pool, find out about local dementia resources, and more

Seniors can learn how to crack an egg next week during one of the many activities planned for Seniors Week 2023.

Seniors Week runs June 4 to 10 and a full calendar will allow seniors to try activities and sports they may have never done, including lawn bowling where to crack an egg is to make a particular shot.

“We will be hosting a variety of free activities, workshops and events all week long,” said Christine Daum, 91ԭ City’s recreation supervisor. “Anyone 50 plus is invited to sign up for a free Seniors Week Activity Pass which will allow them to participate in the events that week.”

There’s a variety of free activities, workshops and events will be held all week long celebrating the young at heart.

“We have a number of other agencies supporting Seniors Week including: Alzheimers Society, 91ԭ City Library, Bria Communities, ICBC, 91ԭ Lawn Bowling Club,” Daum said.

There are a few rules.

1. People must be 50+ years of age

2. They must register for a free Seniors Week Activity Pass available at either the Timms Community Centre, 20399 Douglas Cres. (604-514-2940), or the 91ԭ Seniors Resource Society, 20605 51B Ave. (604-530-3020).

3. Choose the programs and events from the Seniors Week brochure.

4. Some programs require advanced registration. Do that at the Timms Community Centre by calling 604-514-2940 or in person at 20399 Douglas Cres.

5. Programs that do not require advanced registration – show up ready to participate.

Learn to Lawn Bowl

The 91ԭ Lawn Bowling Club lets people try out the fun, social activity that almost everyone can do. Qualified coaches at the club want to show you how fun and easy lawn bowling is. Space is limited and advanced registration is required. At 20471 54 Ave. on Sunday, June 4 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., or Saturday, June 10, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Dementia Friends Workshop

Join experts from the Alzheimers Society to better understand this disease and where to get more information to better understand and support loved one who may be living with Dementia. Space is limited so be sure to pre-register through the Timms Community Centre, 20399 Douglas Cres. either online or via phone. The event happens at Timms on Wednesday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Game on

Access to the Timms Community Centre games room and fitness track are free for anyone with a Seniors Week Activity Pass. There’s pool, foosball, shuffleboard, table tennis, air hockey, and more.

Make a splash

The Al Anderson Memorial Pool, 4949 207th St., is open and there’s free length swimming for those with a Seniors’ Week activity pass. They can swim Monday through Friday from 7 to 9 a.m. or from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday length swimming is from 9 to 11 a.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Tech Help For Seniors

Thinking about creating a Facebook or Kanopy account? Unsure how to download Ebooks, magazines or audiobooks? Bring devices to 91ԭ City Library, 20399 Douglas Cres., and the experts will show participants how to do it all. Advance registration is not required for the session on Thursday, June 8 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Frauds and Scams Workshop

What are the common frauds and scams targeting Canadian seniors? How can seniors protect themselves? Find the answers to these questions and more during this interactive session offered by Seniors First BC. It’s at the City library branch, 20399 Douglas Cres., and people do not need to sign up in advance. Stop by Friday, June 9, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Get in the game

The City has free classes throughout the week including badminton, spinning, yoga, aquafit, body toning, basketball, stretching, Zumba, chair yoga, pickleball, cardio workouts, Bollywood dance workout, and more. Check the City website for dates and times. That’s also where to register for particular classes or call the recreation department at 604-514-2940.

Community Day

Cap off Seniors’ Week with a day of fun in Douglas Park. Community Day features community booths, activity stations, live performances, food and a food truck festival, a marketplace, and beer garden. One of the highlights will be the City fire department’s hands-on challenge course. Seniors can stop by the Bria Communities booth for a free frozen treat. Community Day runs 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. although the community booths are only open until 3 p.m. The food truck festival will be there all day.
