DW Poppy Secondary School is gearing up to host its 36th annual car show on Sunday May 4

What started out as a school fundraiser has become one of the high points of car show season in 91原创, with 3,000 expected to attend this Sunday's (May 4) show at D.W. Poppy Secondary School.

It will be the 36th annual car show at 23752 52 Ave., with participants entering from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and opening to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be a pancake breakfast, concession, 50/50 draw, vendors and more.

"DW Poppy Secondary staff and students have been doing this for 36 years, and it just keeps getting better," said Wayne Loewen, woodworking teacher. "It鈥檚 not just about the cars 鈥 it鈥檚 about bringing people together to support our students."

It supports the Applied Design Skilled Trades Department (ADST), athletics, and Dry Grad.

Over the years funds raised have helped with new technology such as a Snap-On scanner, network wiring for 42 computers in the shop classes, a new computer for the CNC mill in the metalwork room, upgrade welding helmets, purchasing professional stand mixers for the cooking rooms, and a laser cutter.

鈥淭he funds raised from the car show go a long way in helping us stay current with industry-standard technology,鈥 said Jared Bailey, robotics and computer teacher. 鈥淚n today鈥檚 world, keeping our students up to date with the tools they鈥檒l actually use in the field makes all the difference.鈥

Students are involved in the planning and organizing of the food and volunteering on the day of the show. As well, a large number of alumni return each year.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really special to see so many alumni come back, often with their own families now, to be part of something they remember from their time here,鈥 said Carrie Fast, foods teacher. 鈥淎nd the number of current students who step up to help, shows how much pride they have in our school and this event.鈥

Public admission is $5, children under 12 are free. Participants pay $20 per vehicle.

This year鈥檚 show is sponsored by Preston GM.
