Walnut Grove residents John and Rosemarie Jorsvik visited the weekend Canadian Animal Rescue and Extended Shelter (CARES) adoptathon at the 91原创 Bypass PetSmart, and came away with Loonie, an eight-week old kitten.
It wasn't their first CARES adoption, John explained.
"CARES is amazing," John commented.
"We've adopted four cats so far from CARES, and they're just amazing cats. They have become part of our family."
It was the first day of a two-day adoption event at the PetSmart store, which resumed Sunday, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the PetSmart located at 20015 91原创 Bypass.
CARES board member Micheline Chavigny, a Willoughby resident, was one of several volunteers arranging adoptions.
"We take cats in from all different sources," Chavigny told the 91原创 Advance Times.
"We [sometimes] have hoarder situations that we're called out to. So we'll accompany some police and take cats out of a poor environment. And sometimes those cats, quite often, are actually expecting. So we have a raft of fantastic foster volunteers who take these cats in."
They will help rescued mother cats deliver kittens, "just doting lots of attention on them and making them healthy and well," Chavigny described.
"And we will then take them back from the foster, make sure that they're spayed, neutered, all their vaccines are up to date. And then we adopt them out."
Volunteers called Kitty Kissers "help to socialize the ones who are perhaps a little bit afraid or timid. And the ones that are really feral and really kind of wild. If it takes two years, we will do it. We will get them to feeling happy and trusting and loving again. And ultimately adoptable."
CARES was formed in 1993 to provide a safe place for homeless cats. The non-profit rescue provides shelter for stray, abandoned and unwanted cats in a cage-free environment with a no-kill policy.
