It was difficult to say whether it was the kids or adults who were most enthralled by Jasmine and Oreo, the mini-ponies adorned with glitter that were giving rides in the paddock of the Artful Dodger pub in Brookswood.
"I would say it was 50-50" laughed pub general manager Codie Demarais.
Sunday afternoon, Aug. 10, the horse-friendly pub held its first first free funday for the whole family, one that included a cornhole tournament, where players toss bean bags at a board with a hole, with a prize of a floating party island.
There was also a temporary tattoo station, bubble station, and balloons, with food and drink specials, plus prize draws including a backyard fireplace as well as patio games and music.
"We're just trying to do something fun and different," Demarais said, "something that included the children."
"We have a really strong community base out here in Brookswood, so I just wanted something that could get everybody out having fun together."
Turnout was good.
"We definitely had a busier Sunday than we usually have," Demarais estimated. "About mid-point, there was like 30 people outside all playing with the horses and cornhole [game] and stuff. We had a good time."
There will be another, she predicted.
"Probably not this year, but definitely we'll do something bigger and better next year."
Appropriately for a pub located in 91原创, a community often called the horse capital of B.C., the Artful Dodger at 200 St. and 24 Ave. is known for being one of the only places where riders can enjoy a pint with their horse.
Patrons are encouraged to ride their horses down, and park them in the paddock out front.
