VIDEO: Vanguard school car and craft show raised $5K

First since pandemic draws fewer cars, but still a success

Just because Trevor Robinson squeezed a 450-horsepower high-output engine into his project car, it doesn't means he breaks the speed limit.

At least, that was his story when the Mission resident was being interviewed during the Vanguard Secondary School Cars and Crafts show fundraiser on Saturday, May 17.

"No, I never go past it [speed limit]," Robinson said, straight-faced.

"Never go past the gas station, either."

It was the third cars and crafts event held by Vanguard Secondary at 244 Street and Fraser Hwy. – the first since the pandemic.

Organizer Megan Dunstall, a special education assistant at Vanguard, called this a "comeback year."

"We did two years [of the event] before COVID, and we've taken a break and we've revamped and rejuvenated for this year," Dunstall explained.

At a preliminary estimate, roughly $5,000 was raised, which will go to the grad class of 2025 to help offset the costs of their dinner dance.

Dunstall said the amount raised was slightly up from previous shows, which was pretty good, considering the rainy weather that reduced turnout.

"We had about 40 [cars]," Dunstall estimated.

"I was hoping for 100."

Participants and student volunteers all had a good time, she feels.

Brookswood's Bill Casey brought his 1926 Chevrolet one-ton truck that has been featured in a number of film and television productions, including "The Man in the High Castle," series.

"It'll be 99 years old on June the 9th," said Casey, 82.

Steve Williams, president of the Fraser Valley chapter of the Pharaohs Car Club, the oldest car club in North America, arrived with several club members who brought about 20 classic rides to assist the fundraiser.

"We're here to help them in any way we possibly can," Williams said.

Dunstall praised the student volunteers.

"The best part was the amount of students that came out and stayed all day. They were amazing. People were super impressed with them. And that is, for them, probably a super huge deal just to say they're going to do something and do it," Dunstall said.

"On the Monday, they were all talking about it, telling everyone [who] didn't come, how they missed out on a great day."

Vanguard Secondary is an alternative Type 3 high school, one that focuses on educational, social and emotional issues for students whose needs are not being met in a traditional school program.

It provides programs for students in grades 8-12 that emphasize experiential learning, career education, and preparation for post-secondary education or employment.
