Local artist Lisa Nickel explores the concept of 鈥渂ayit鈥 through her new painting series.

Explore the meaning of home at the Fort Gallery鈥檚 latest show, BAYIT, on until Dec. 6, with artists Lisa Nickel and Betty Spackman.

Nickel鈥檚 new painting series is an exploration of personal and social responsibility based on how people live and view the living situations of others.

鈥淭he word 鈥榖ayit鈥 used in both the Arabic and Hebrew languages to denote a dwelling place or home, additionally encompasses ambiguous concepts such as feeling at home in images or textual spaces,鈥 Nickel said.

鈥淚n this body of work, I use both the literal and metaphorical meanings of 鈥榖ayit鈥 in order to look at the precariousness of human life, our interconnectedness with the other and the resulting obligations of our cohabitation.鈥

Spackman, whose multimedia work has often dealt with issues of home, supports Nickel鈥檚 theme of 鈥渂ayit鈥 with a series of assemblage works and collages.

鈥淭he minimal assemblage pieces I have made for this exhibition are layered iconic architectural forms representing 鈥榟ouse鈥 鈥 the ideals of dwellings based on particular ways of defining 鈥榟ome鈥 in terms of property and power that we use as a platform from which to judge success and failure,鈥 Spackman said.
