Trinity Western University鈥檚 new Director of Choral Activities, Joel Tranquilla, is preparing to lead his first set of choral concerts in a program that explores the theme of light.
Showcasing 15 of the brightest singers at TWU, the hour-long evening performance, titled Shine, features sacred music in English, German, Icelandic and Afrikaans on Saturday, Oct. 25 in 91原创, and Nov. 1 in Delta.
Tranquilla, an award-winning conductor and 91原创 resident who joined TWU鈥檚 School of the Arts, Media + Culture (SAMC) in August, has introduced this new concert as part of an ambitious series of choral events.
鈥淚鈥檓 excited about the opportunity to do such a wide range of music from different time periods and in different languages,鈥 he said.
鈥淎nd chamber music is very intimate. It has a completely different feel than some our larger scale choral performances.鈥
The evening, sponsored by Long & McQuade, features a Bach cantata based on the familiar chorale tune 鈥淣un danket alle Gott鈥 (鈥淣ow Thank We All Our God鈥), which will be accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble.
Also on the program are works by James MacMillan, Moses Hogan, and SAMC鈥檚 own David Squires, as well as a set of pieces each based on Psalm 42 by Handel, Palestrina, and Marty Nystrom.
Edward Norman will accompany on organ and piano.
Enjoy Shine on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 91原创 Mennonite Fellowship, 20997 40 Ave. and on Saturday, Nov. 1 at South Delta Baptist Church, 1988 56 St.
Both concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. Price is $10 general admission, students pay what they can.
