The Fort Gallery in Fort 91Ô´´ presents a new show of work by Edith Krause and Jo-Ann Sheen entitled Esse est Percipi (‘to be is to be perceived’), running April 22 to May 10.
Perception is everything; it confirms and ultimately defines existence.
It stirs questions about the objectivity of reality and truth, and why at a time when communications technology allows for instantaneous transmission of information, understanding is as elusive as ever.
Sheen combines the printmaking techniques of etching and monotype to provide a portrait of the interaction of our complex inner selves and the face we put on for others to see. Etched and carved lines reference memory and experience beneath a surface monotype that is unable to completely cover these traces.
The images of sensory tissue cross sections in Krause’s series Interior Landscapes stand as metaphor for the complex interior landscape that is the context from which each of us perceives reality.
The opening reception will be on Sunday, April 26 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Gallery hours are Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
