Artist Lisa Nickel brings her new painting series Bayit to the Fort Gallery until Dec. 6 with an opening Reception on Saturday, Nov. 21 from 2 to 5 p.m.
Alongside Nickel鈥檚 work is that of multimedia artist Betty Spackman.
Nickel noted bayit is a word used in both Arabic and Hebrew to denote home. Her paintings explore both literal and metaphorical meanings of the word.
Spackman鈥檚 work has often dealt with issues of home through her own series of assemblage works and collages.
The pairing of the artists鈥� projects gives a feeling for how living situations are viewed and how individuals respond to others based on their dwelling, lack of dwelling, or homelessness.
Prized poet
91原创鈥檚 own Taylor Theodore won the third annual Ode to a Farmer poetry contest put on by the BC Association of Farmers鈥� Markets.
Not only did Theodore win in the Vancouver, Coast & Mountain region, she also was the grand prize winner for the entire contest.
Her poem, 鈥淥de to a Farmer, From his Love鈥�, along with other winning poems, can be found on the association鈥檚 website at www.bcfarmersmarket.org.
Single launch
Local country band Me and Mae is celebrating a brand new single 鈥淥nly Live Once鈥� which features the pop-country vocals of group member Colette Trudeau.
The band is looking to continue their success on the country music scene after taking several awards since their debut album in 2014.
RCMP book on sale
The 鈥淗istory of the RCMP Marine Services鈥� book by Kenneth John Haycock is on sale by donation (suggested minimum of $10) at the lelem arts and culture cafe and the gift store at the Fort 91原创 National Historic Site.
All proceeds go to the 91原创 Christmas Bureau from sales of the book filled with stories of heroic, yet ordinary men and women.
Nutcracking dancers
91原创鈥檚 own Emmaly Colins will be joined by other young dancers from around the Lower Mainland in the Ballet BC presentation of The Nutcracker.
This holiday classic will be staged at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver and presents the Alberta Ballet in the performances at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 and 30 and 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 31.
There are more than 80 local student dancers from dance schools all over the Lower Mainland in the production.
The musical score will be played live by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for all four performances. Tickets are available through ticketmaster.ca or at 1-855-985-2787.
Pipers piping
The Central Valley Community Pipeband, led by pipe major Brittany Otto is looking for new pipers and drummers.
All levels are welcome and an eight week beginners program is planned for the new year. The group meets Wednesday evenings at Coghlan Community Hall at 6795 256 St. in Aldergrove.
