Gems of the Baroque wind trio repertoire will be performed on period instruments by TWU faculty this weekend.
Evocative, ornate, and luminous. Such is the beauty of Baroque music, said Suzanne Klukas, TWU Instructor of music, piano, and artistic director of the Faculty + Friends Recital Series.
When composed for woodwind trio, these emotive chamber pieces take on an intimate and conversational tone, she added. As they do in A Baroque Trio Afternoon 鈥� chamber music from the Baroque era performed on period wind instruments by TWU performance faculty: Paolo Bortolussi, Baroque Flute; Marea Chernoff, Baroque Oboe; and Allan Thorpe, Baroque Bassoon.
鈥淭hree instruments will dialogue in an intimate setting, providing the audience with a close-up experience that will feel more participatory than observational,鈥� Klukas explained.
She鈥檚 convinced that early-music lovers will be thrilled to hear the works of Georg Philipp Telemann, Johann Joseph Fux, and Johann David Heinichen performed on reproductions of period instruments.

鈥淒uring the mid-20th century, there was a movement to return to playing Baroque music in an authentic manner on period instruments or reproductions of them,鈥� added Allan Thorpe, TWU鈥檚 associate professor of music and the ensemble鈥檚 bassoonist.
鈥淭he result is a return to a gentler sound with subtle articulation and a more peaceful, relaxing aesthetic,鈥� he said.
According to Thorpe, moving performances on these more gentle instruments back into more intimate spaces, such as 91原创 Mennonite Fellowship, helps to complete the restoration of these works to their original sound.
The School of the Arts, Media + Culture鈥檚 Faculty + Friends Recital Series provides opportunities for faculty to share artistic projects with the local community.
Recitals often feature collaborations between colleagues from Trinity Western and other universities and arts organizations.
A Baroque Trio Afternoon takes place this Sunday, March 19 at 2:30 p.m. at 91原创 Mennonite Fellowship Church, 20997 40 Ave, 91原创. It is part of the faith-based post secondary school鈥檚 eighth annual Festival of the Arts, Media + Culture (FAMC).
