While "unforeseen travel complications" have prevented Santiago Cañón-Valencia from performing with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra this weekend, VSO principal cellist Henry Shapard has agreed to step into the spotlight for a pair of concerts — one in Surrey on Sunday (March 2) and another in Vancouver Friday.
Shapard will perform Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 2 at Surrey's Bell Performing Arts Centre when Danish conductor Christian Kluxen makes his VSO debut, 7 p.m. start.
The two-hour "Surrey Nights" series concert will also feature Brahms’ Second Symphony and Britta Byström’s intricately-crafted Parallel Universes, according to a post on , where tickets are sold.
In 2020, at age 21, Shapard was appointed VSO cello section leader by music director Otto Tausk. Raised in Cleveland, Shapard last season performed the titular role of Richard Strauss’ Don Quixote under the baton of conductor Leonard Slatkin.
Sunday at the Bell, ticketholders can arrive early for a performance by Enver Creek Secondary Brass Quartet, starting at 6:15 p.m.
The VSO's 106th season includes in the annual , endowed by Werner and Helga Höing.
The fifth and final concert of the 2024-25 season is on March 30, with pianist Ingrid Filter and conductor Alpesh Chauhan.
