The man who sped away from a police stop and slammed into another vehicle in downtown 91原创 last week was banned from being behind the wheel of a vehicle, police say.
The driver of a Ford F-150 that slammed head-on into an SUV driven by a 72-year-old woman is now facing charges related to breaching his driving ban, as well as to the crash itself, said Sgt. Brenda Winpenny, spokesperson for the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU).
A uniformed member of the anti-gang unit was in 91原创 on Friday around noon when he spotted a truck that had an issue with its license plates, Winpenny said.
The officer pulled over the vehicle near the 20100 block of 56th Avenue.
When the officer got out of his car and walked toward the pickup driver鈥檚 window, the truck sped off.
It didn鈥檛 get far. The vehicle hopped a median on 56th Avenue at high speeds and slammed into a 2012 GMC Terrain, according to 91原创 RCMP Cpl. Craig van Herk.
The pickup then veered off the road and came to rest against the gates of a nearby condo parking lot entrance.
The 72-year-old woman driving the Terrain was taken to 91原创 Memorial Hospital, with some non-life threatening injuries.
Winpenny said the pickup driver isn鈥檛 someone who was known to the CFSEU or under investigation for gang ties. The officer simply noticed a discrepancy with the license plate and tried to pull the vehicle over.
