KPU appoints new president and vice-chancellor

Dr. Bruce Choy will be Kwantlen Polytechnic University's new president and vice-chancellor as of Sept. 2 when Dr. Alan Davis steps down after 13 years.

KPU's board of governors made the appointment public on Thursday.

Choy is an adjunct professor with the University of Toronto and chairman of the George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology’s board of governors.

A KPU communications bulletin states he is not taking interviews until the assumes the job but includes a quote attributed to him in the press release: â€œI am excited to lead an organization like KPU that focuses on student success. Education has given so much to me and I am passionate about how it can open transformative pathways for future generations."

Ivy Chen, chairwoman of KPU's board of governors, says Choy "brings an incredible depth and breadth of leadership experience to KPU — from both the private sector and the post-secondary sector — that will be invaluable in guiding KPU through its next chapter."

The bulletin describes Choy as a specialist in governance and risk management and notes he is an independent board director with an Institute of Corporate Directors, Director designation and also is a director of Shinhan Bank Canada and board governor of a corporate and public policy think-tank called The Long Run Institute. 

Listed among his professional activities, Choy served as a senior executive at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, a Partner at PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) and a managing director at the Global Risk Institute. Academically he received a doctorate from the University of Syndney, Australia specializing in mathematics for risk management.

Among his accomplishments, Choy is a university and R.A. Priddle medallist from the university’s Faculty of Engineering and early in his career was a tenure-track academic in engineering focussed on environmental protection. Moreover, he's a Sloan Fellow from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and currently teaches finance in the Master of Financial Risk Management program for the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

KPU was opened in 1981 and has five campuses in Surrey, Richmond,and 91Ô­´´.
