Abbotsford Canucks reach record numbers on Google and social media

The Abbotsford Canucks had a record setting season on and off the ice.

The Calder Cup run helped lead the Abbotsford Canucks to new heights both on the ice and on the Internet, as the American Hockey League team reached its highest search interest ever in late-May and early-June.

Google Trends data obtained by The News shows the week of June 22 to 28 is now the new peak for Google search traffic in the team's four-year history.

That week received a relative score of 100 when compared to the entire history of the term (Abbotsford Canucks) since the team was announced in July 2021. The week of June 15 to 21 scored an 88, while the weeks of June 8 to 14 and June 1 to 7 scored a 62.

The searchability of a topic is scored by Google on a relative scale of 0 to 100.

The Canucks were in the middle of the Calder Cup Finals during that peak, with the Western Conference Finals occurring in late-May and early-June. The initial spike for this season actually began from May 4 to 10 when the team was playing the Coachella Valley Firebirds in the Pacific Division semifinal. That week has a relative score of 23, but was when the momentum online began.

The flurry of activity this season eclipsed the previous high for the team, which was April 30 to May 6, 2023 when the Canucks were battling the Calgary Wranglers in the Pacific Division semifinal. The 2023-24 season saw Google traffic decrease for the team.

The Calder Cup Finals run also launched the Abbotsford Canucks above the Vancouver Canucks for the first time ever in Google search traffic. In late-May the two terms were equal, but Abbotsford edged Vancouver in Google search traffic for the entire month of June. Vancouver failed to make the playoffs in 2024-25 and had not played a game since the season ended in April.

Looking at the interest by region over the past year, Canada is the top country searching the Abbotsford Canucks and Somalia is number two. Latvia, New Zealand and Sweden round out the top five. It's likely that Latvia will decrease next season as Latvian star goalie Arturs Silovs was dealt by the team to the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier this month. The United States ranks eighth overall and is behind Hong Kong and Finland. The countries of Switzerland and Australia round out the top 10 for 2024-25.

Breaking down Canada further sees that British Columbia is the top province searching the term, with Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nova Scotia making up the top five. Looking into B.C. even further sees Abbotsford, Mission, Agassiz, Chilliwack and Pitt Meadows as the top five cities searching the Abbotsford Canucks.

Instagram also saw a huge increase for the team with a leap of over 70 per cent. Abbotsford has now surpassed the Canadians in Instagram followers. The club was also one of the few local teams to grow an X following with 28.1 per cent growth from 2024.

Abbotsford returns to the ice on Oct. 10 and the club's home opener is set for Friday, Oct. 24.
