The Abbotsford Police Department is introducing visual reminders to strongly encourage drivers to avoid getting behind the wheel when impaired.
As part of the APD's three-pillar strategy (prevention, education, and enforcement), in collaboration with ICBC and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), roadside signs will be placed throughout the community to highlight the weekly locations where officers have apprehended impaired drivers.
The bright red signs state "Impaired Driver Caught Here".
According to a press release from the APD, these signs will serve as a reminder to all road users about the devastating impacts of impaired driving. They also serve as a reminder for the community to report any suspected impaired drivers to the police.
The APD shared that they have taken 345 impaired drivers off the roads so far this year, a big jump from the 198 drivers removed during the same period in 2024.
"While our increased enforcement efforts have contributed to these numbers, there appears to be a significant rise in impaired-driving incidents," stated APD Sgt. Paul Walker. "We are committed to understanding the underlying causes and addressing this issue head-on."
MADD Upper Fraser Valley's Andrea Angers said driving impaired is a bad choice that is preventable.
"Impaired is impaired," she stated. "Making the choice to drive while under the influence is senseless and can have devastating impacts. Risking the lives of our fellow community members is not a choice that anyone should be making."
