Plans for a potential second phase of LNG Canada took a step forward Aug. 1 with the awarding of a new engineering contract to the JGC-Fluor joint venture that delivered Phase 1 of the project.

The contract is seen as a strong signal that momentum is building toward a final investment decision (FID) on the long-anticipated Phase 2 expansion. While no FID has been made, recent developments and political support suggest a favourable direction.

Premier David Eby has expressed optimism about a possible Phase 2, saying during a recent site visit, 鈥淚鈥檓 very much looking forward to coming back here and making the announcement of an LNG Canada Phase 2.鈥 LNG Canada CEO Chris Cooper also pointed to positive ongoing discussions with government and the stabilization of Phase 1 operations as critical steps toward future expansion."That's what we're chasing, " he said.

The FEED award follows the commissioning of Phase 1, which shipped its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo on June 30. JGC Fluor has played a central role in the project since 2018, delivering engineering, procurement, fabrication management, construction and commissioning services.

鈥淲e鈥檝e been a proud partner of LNG Canada through Phase 1 and we look forward to contributing to the next chapter in the construction of this world-class facility,鈥 said Mike Alexander, Fluor鈥檚 business group president of energy solutions.

With an annual production capacity of up to 14 million tonnes, the LNG Canada facility positions Canada as a global supplier of liquified natural gas. A second phase would double the facility鈥檚 capacity.

LNG Canada is a joint venture between Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corporation and KOGAS.
