Two lanes on Highway 1 near Hope are being closed to repair a large sinkhole.
"A sinkhole initially appeared on Highway 1 in November 2024. It was quickly repaired and has been continually monitored while a design was underway for a permanent fix," said the Ministry of Transportation and Transit in a Thursday afternoon (March 27) press release. "Due to heavy rainfall, conditions have deteriorated and now require further interim repairs to ensure the safety of motorists. The repairs will begin tonight and will extend through the weekend and into next week."
The sinkhole appeared near Exit 165, at Flood Hope Road, and is across the eastbound lane. One eastbound lane and one westbound lane will be closed for repairs, which will begin Thursday evening. It is expected to continue into next week.
During this time, Exit 165 will be closed and drivers are asked to take Exit 168 to access Flood Hope Road.
"Drivers should plan for delays. Peak traffic volumes are expected between noon and 10 p.m. on March 30, especially for traffic travelling west toward Vancouver due to spring break travel," the ministry added.
Drivers are asked to be cautious of workers and to obey all signage, including ones to reduce speed.
An update on the repairs' progress, along with an estimate of when Exit 165 will reopen, will be available on DriveBC on Monday (March 31).
Updates to follow.
