A rainfall warning is in effect for much of Metro Vancouver.

Surrey and White Rock residents woke up to a wet Sunday morning, as did most Metro Vancouverites, with a rainfall warning in effect for much of the region.

Environment Canada issued the warning saying rain — at times, heavy — is expected throughout the Lower Mainland, valley, North Shore and Sunshine Coast.

Between 70n and 120 millimetres of rain is expected through Sunday and into Monday, Environment Canada said, as well as rising freezing levels.

Where: Metro Vancouver - northern sections, Fraser Valley - West including Abbotsford, Howe Sound, Sunshine Coast - Gibsons to Earls Cove.

"The heaviest rainfall is expected today and tonight," the federal agency said Sunday (March 23).

"Periods of rain will continue into Monday before tapering off in the afternoon. Further east, towards Abbotsford, the heaviest rainfall is expected tonight and into Monday morning."

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible, the agency cautioned, with drivers encouraged to turn on their headlights and maintain a safe following distance.
