The large sinkhole on Highway 1 near Hope has been repaired as of Monday afternoon (March 31).
The highway is expected to fully open by the end of the day.
"Emergency work to repair a sinkhole on Highway 1 west of Hope progressed well over the weekend," said the Ministry of Transportation and Transit in an email to the Hope Standard. "Paving is now complete. Crews are working today to clean up the site and reinstate traffic fully in each direction.
"Traffic remains single lane in each direction and is anticipated to fully reopen by end of the day."
The sinkhole appeared near Exit 165, at Flood Hope Road, last Thursday (March 27) and was spreading across the eastbound lane. One eastbound lane and one westbound lane were closed for repairs, which began Thursday evening.
Exit 165 has been closed since then and drivers have been using Exit 168 to access Flood Hope Road.
Drivers are still being asked to be cautious of workers and to obey all signage, including ones to reduce speed, as cleanup continues.
According to the ministry, the sinkhole initially appeared on Highway 1 in November 2024. It was quickly repaired and the ministry has been monitoring it while designing a permanent fix. The sinkhole "reappeared" due to the recent heavy rainfall in the area.
