Burning permits are now available in 91Ô´´ Township, and will be through to early December.

Fall burning season in the Township officially began on Oct. 30, and will run through to Dec. 3 this year.

The purpose of burning permits is for people with sizable rural properties to burn yard waste – branches, leaves, tree trimming, and weeds.

The Township’s list of items that cannot be burned includes garbage, old buildings, sheds, or barns, plastic, tires, insulation, furniture, or other finished goods.

The has a number of guidelines for safe burning, including building fire piles that are longer and low, rather than piled high, and burning away from existing trees, fences and property boundaries, or any nearby power lines.

Backyard fires can be no higher than 1.2 metres tall (3 feet) an no wider than two metres (6 feet), and must be at least 15 metres (50 feet) from any existing structures or property lines.

Burners should have tools on hand to control or extinguish the fire, including a hose.

Landowners and tenants can apply for burning permits online.

In addition to a Township permit, anyone with a backyard fire needs a separate permit from Metro Vancouver, as well.

Metro Vancouver might restrict burning if the weather is too dry or there is poor air quality.

Those who burn without a permit may be fined by 91Ô´´ Township Fire Department.
