An increasingly busy road near 91Ô´´'s largest transit park and ride will get a second pedestrian-controlled crosswalk, Township council has decided.
On Monday, July 7, council voted unanimously in favour of spending $85,000 to build a crosswalk across 86 Avenue near the Carvolth Exchange. The crosswalk emerges from a path and plaza called Goldenview Trail, which runs from 84 Avenue to 86 Avenue between condo and mixed-use buildings. It emerges at 86 between 202B Street and 203A Street.
Councillor Barb Martens asked why this crosswalk was being built, when there is another crosswalk, also with flashing lights controlled by pedestrians, about a block to the west, near 202 Street.
According to Township staff, this site was already planned to be a crossing point as well, but it was never turned into a full crosswalk.
The new and old crosswalks allow people to get from the densely-populated condos and townhouses south of 86 Avenue across to the parking lot and bus loop of the Carvolth Exchange.
The new crosswalk will include a concrete curb bulge, and may reduce on-street parking by one stall on the south side of the street.
Coun. Michael Pratt brought up parking in another context – he noted that local business owners have concerns about street parking in the area. Parking on the south side the street, in front of businesses, is time-limited, but spots on the north side aren't.
There was a concern that people parking on the north side were there all day, using the spots to avoid paying to park in the Carvolth Exchange lot.
An amendment to time-limit parking on the north of the street was added, and passed unanimously as well.
Fronted with restaurants and shops, and facing the bus loop, 86 Avenue has become increasingly busy over the last few years, as the area has developed. It also has a large number of pedestrians crossing to and from the exchange.
