A Surrey man has pleaded guilty to four criminal charges linked to a chaotic carjacking in 91原创 last July that ended when an RCMP officer rammed a stolen five-tonne truck.
Edward Joseph Biwer is scheduled to be sentenced in Surrey Provincial Court on May 2.
Biwer entered a guilty plea in February during a pre-trial appearance.
The incident that led to Biwer's arrest started in the 20200-block of 64 Avenue, where a woman reported being attacked while getting out of her car. A man got into the driver's seat and drove off erratically.
The stolen car crashed in a three-car collision at 200 Street and 64 Avenue, just a quarter mile away. 91原创 RCMP reported that the suspect then tried to carjack other vehicles, but was unsuccessful, and ran away.
As police converged on the area, reports came in of a 5-tonne truck that was stolen from around 196 Street and Willowbrook Drive. More 911 calls reported that the truck was being driven in a dangerous manner, and in the 7200 block of 200 Street, it crashed into several parked cars.
An RCMP officer used his patrol vehicle to bring the truck to a stop by deliberately crashing into its front wheel. The driver, Biwer, was arrested at the scene.
Biwer was originally charged with one count of robbery, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, one count of mischief, one count of assault, one count of dangerous operation of motor vehicle, one count of driving while prohibited, and one count of failing to stop after an accident. Surrey Provincial Court staff could not say on which charges he has pleaded guilty.
Biwer has been in pre-trial custody since his arrest.
Before this incident, Biwer had served a 10-year prison term after being convicted on seven charges related to a previous carjacking incident near the 91原创-Surrey border in 2014. During that incident, he carjacked and punched a pregnant woman, attempted to rob a pre-school teacher, and flung a dog from a moving vehicle.
