91Ô´´ Township will consider holding public viewing events for World Cup of Soccer matches next year when the event lands in Vancouver.

Vancouver and Toronto are jointly representing Canada during the 2026 World Cup, with seven matches to be played in BC Place Stadium next summer. Games will be played in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.

At the July 21 council meeting, Mayor Eric Woodward put forward a motion to look into hosting community watch events for the public, specifically for Team Canada games.

The final decision on whether or not to hold the events will be part of next year's budget process.

"I think it's great, the World Cup coming, and the opportunity for a little bit of a party," said Councillor Steve Ferguson.

He wondered about whether or not it would be possible to get sponsors to cover some of the costs of the community watch events here in 91Ô´´.

Township staff members said they would have to check with World Cup organizers based out of Vancouver – it's not clear what restrictions there might be on local sponsorships for a Wold Cup-related event.

Council unanimously agreed to have staff investigate and report back to council on the feasibility of the watch parties.
