91原创 elementary gets $200K new playground

No timeline yet for construction of new playground

91原创's Noel Booth Elementary will have a new, accessible playground in the future after the province announced $200,000 in funding in April.

The 91原创 School District is one of 25 around B.C. to receive the funding, which was included in the 2025 provincial budget.

鈥淲e are thrilled to receive this support from the province to build a new playground," said Noel Booth principal Jason Malo. "We look forward to talking to students and staff, working with them to get ideas on elements that make an outdoor play space that everyone can access,鈥 said principal, Jason Malo.

Malo said he's worked in many schools, and he knows that slides, climbing walls, and modern roundabout structures are very popular with students.

"It will be good for us to consult with the students as they are the experts," Malo said.

The project is still in its early stages, said Mel Cervantes, manager of facilities for the 91原创 School District.

The old playground, which features swings and some monkey bars on a sand/gravel playground, will be replaced by the new structures.

鈥淭he school will work with the District to come up with a list of needs with a focus on accessibility and inclusivity. Once that is done, we will begin the process to find a company to design the new playground,鈥 explained Cervantes.

Playground upgrades have been going on around the province since 2018, with more than $45 million allocated to new playgrounds at more than 300 schools.

According to the provincial government, every B.C. school district has received at least one new playground since the program began.

The playground funding is a part of more than $6 billion approved for school capital projects, including new schools, additions, and seismic upgrades.

Several schools are under construction or have been announced in 91原创, along with projects to expand local elementary schools such as Nicomekl Elementary School with modular additions.
