Need a bike repaired? A pop-up shop will have it fixed in no time.

91ԭ Environmental Protection Society (LEPS) is resurrecting the “Repair Cafe” with funding received from the 91ԭ Township.

Repair Cafes were held often prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nichole Marples, executive director of LEPS, said the cafes inspire sustainability on a local level and encourage people to work together.

“While specialist volunteers repair broken belongings, participants pick up on hands-on skills. This helps people engage with like-minded community members, practice teamwork, and build relationships from a place of reciprocity, trust, and sustainability,” she explained.

There will be three cafes held this year, the first focused on bike repairing in time for the good weather.

“We chose to host a bike specific cafe in the summer to help residents spruce up their bikes for summer riding,” Marples said.

The bike repair cafe takes place on Saturday, July 8 at 10 a.m. at James Kennedy Elementary — located on 212th Street.

LEPS will also have community booths featuring members from cycling advocacy group HUB 91ԭ, and displays about sustainable transportation and environmental projects.

A bike parade around the school field is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and participants are encouraged to decorate their bikes to compete for a prize.

“Repair Cafes encourage the reduction of waste sent to landfills, facilitate the repurposing and repair of common household goods, and build a community of volunteers dedicated to supporting this cause,” Marples said.

The next Repair Cafe will be held on Sept. 9, and the final before the end of the year.
