A passer by who spotted smoke coming from the roof alerted residents of a Fort 91原创 house in the 8900 block of Mackie Street on Sunday night, Oct. 8.
Kevin Snowdon, 91原创 Township assistant fire chief said the call came in at 10:35 p.m.
鈥淭wo people were at home at the time. [We were told] a passer by saw the fire and came and knocked on their door and let them know because they weren鈥檛 even aware of it. They were able to get out along with the family cat.鈥
A resident of the area, who asked not to be identified, told the 91原创 Advance Times it was a neighbour who alerted the residents.
There were no injuries.
Based on the initial reports of a roof fire, multiple fire crews were called to the scene, Snowdon said, with seven fire vehicles and about 30 firefighters responding, while an eighth vehicle stood by.
鈥淚t was taken to a second alarm initially while the crews were on route, based on the information that they had, and then, when the first engine arrived, they took it to a third alarm just out of precaution, because it looked like the fire was potentially getting into the attic space,鈥 Snowdon told the 91原创 Advance Times.
Snowdon said crews 鈥渨ere able to do a pretty pretty good, quick knockdown from the outside, and then they went inside the home up to the second floor to access the attic and put out a few hot spots from inside the home.鈥
Damage was contained to the exterior gable end and the attic space.
A fire department investigator was expected at the location on Monday to look into the cause, which is suspected to be electrical.
