Safety review underway after Golden Ears Bridge crash

Costs for bridge repairs will be dealt with by contractor, not TransLink

A review of Golden Ears Bridge safety is underway after a crash that temporarily closed most lanes in each direction earlier this month.

Just before 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 14 a semi truck and trailer collided with the centre barricades dividing the north and southbound lanes of the bridge.

The northbound truck tipped on its side, and the concrete blocks it dislodged from the centre median were sent flying into the southbound lanes. Repair crews and tow truck operators had to block two lanes in each direction for several hours as the blocks were hauled back into place, and cranes were used to haul the truck and trailer upright so they could be towed away.

91原创 RCMP and Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement (CVSE) officers were on scene.

The driver of the truck was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the 91原创 RCMP. A police investigation into the cause of the crash is still active.

TransLink, which owns the bridge, is also looking into the crash.

A spokesperson for the transit agency said a review of bridge safety is underway to find potential additional safety measures that could be implemented.

The cleanup cost won't be picked up by TransLink, the spokesperson said. TransLink's agreement with the contractor who oversees maintenance, operations, and bridge rehabilitation means the contractor will pick up the bill.
