Used oil recycler comes up with slick solution for 91原创

91原创 joins neighbouring Lower Mainland communities in having disposal options closer to home

91原创 residents will now be able to take used motor oil, and antifreeze to the Aldergrove transfer station for recycling.

It joins neighbouring Lower Mainland communities in having closer to home options.

Used oil, antifreeze, oil filters, and related automotive containers can be taken to a designated drop-off area at the facility at 1070 272 St.

鈥淭here was a gap we needed to fill in the 91原创 area to enable safe collection, handling and storage of these materials,鈥 said David Lawes, CEO, Interchange Recycling. 鈥淚n Surrey, Richmond, and other nearby municipalities, we鈥檝e seen several local businesses make our annual Top Collector List, which honours businesses across B.C. for their exemplary performance and dedication to the collection of used oil and antifreeze materials. The Central Surrey Recycling and Waste Centre, Semiahmoo Bottle Depot in Surrey, and other local facilities all collected thousands of litres of used oil in 2023 and made our fifth annual Top Collector List. We鈥檙e pleased to be able to service the 91原创 community in this capacity.鈥

Interchange Recycling was formerly called the BC Used Oil Management Association.

鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to expand the list of materials accepted for recycling at the 91原创 Recycling and Waste Centre to include used oil and antifreeze. This makes it even easier to drop off a wide variety of items beyond what goes into a household recycling bin,鈥 said Sarah Kirby-Yung, chair of Metro Vancouver鈥檚 Zero Waste Committee. 鈥淥ur regional recycling system remains one of the most successful and resilient in North America, thanks to effective provincial producer responsibility programs, a robust local recycling industry, and strong regional policies.鈥

Metro Vancouver has a 65-per-cent recycling rate. This is in part due to provincial regulations that make producers responsible for financing and operating the recycling systems for their products.

Used oil can be re-refined into new lubricating oil or material inputs for manufacturing or energy products. Additionally, used oil filters contain recyclable metals that can go into products like rebar, nails, and wire. Used oil and antifreeze containers are recycled and used to manufacture new oil containers, drainage tiles, and parking curbs. Used antifreeze is refined and reused as new automotive antifreeze.

A comprehensive list of all the public recycling centres across B.C. can be found at https://interchangerecycling.com/find-a-recycling-centre.

Formed in 2003, Interchange Recycling is a collaborative, not-for-profit group dedicated to the collection and recycling of used lubricating oil, used antifreeze and automotive containers in B.C. Each year approximately 50 million litres of oil, and three million litres of antifreeze are collected and responsibly managed through its network of public recycling centres and generators across the province. Learn more at interchangerecycling.com.

Metro Vancouver delivers regional utility services, including water, sewers and wastewater treatment, and solid waste management. It also regulates air quality, plans for urban growth, manages a regional parks system, provides affordable housing, and serves as a regional federation. For solid waste, the regional district is responsible for waste reduction and recycling planning,  and the operation of solid waste facilities across the region.
