VIDEO: Lawn bowlers kick off season with huge garage sale

Giant sale Saturday will raise money for upkeep and maintenance of local sport facilities

Upwards of 20 tables, a lot of available floor space, even many chairs are stacked high with household items, games and puzzles, small appliances, craft supplies, comic books, DVDs, seasonal decorations, artwork, and sporting equipment that are being organized and priced inside the 91Ô´´ Lawn Bowling Club's clubhouse this week, ahead of what organizers expect to be their biggest fundraiser yet.

The club is gearing up for its annual giant spring garage sale this coming Saturday, and organizer Penny Wellar has been pleasantly surprised by the generosity of all its club members and supporters in the form of donations.

This is the third year for the sale, which raises money for the club's ongoing operation and upkeep of the site. The first year, Wellar said they were able to raise about $1,200 with 11 tables full of items. Last year, the event grew a bit, raising close to $1,500.

And this year, Wellar has her heart set on breaking the $2,000 mark thanks to the generosity of donors and, of course, she noted, the buyers expected to arrive for the early spring sale.

The garage sale will be held, rain or shine, inside the lawn bowling clubhouse at 20471 54 Ave., on the south side of Douglas Park, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
