With good habits and regular dental appointments, your teeth can last a lifetime. But to improve your chances of keeping a healthy smile, you鈥檒l want to develop a strong relationship with your dentist.
鈥淲hen we age, teeth undergo changes. Sometimes these changes are affected by chronic diseases and the use of medications. Some changes may include sensitive teeth, exposed roots, and darker or yellower teeth,鈥 says Dr. Fatemeh Basij, DDS, dentist and the owner of .
Periodontal issues
Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, occurs when bacteria damages the mouth鈥檚 hard and soft tissues.
鈥淚n most cases, it starts with plaque forming on teeth. If it isn鈥檛 removed, plaque turns to tartar, which is filled with bacteria that can destroy the bone that supports your teeth,鈥 Dr. Basij says. 鈥淏ut the good news is that brushing, flossing and regular dental cleaning can greatly reduce your chances of developing periodontitis.鈥
In the early stages of periodontitis you may not experience any pain, but when gums pull away from teeth it鈥檚 easier for food and plaque to collect, creating potential for more damage and sensitivity.
鈥淲e recommend seniors over the age of 65 schedule a professional cleaning at least every six months, in addition to brushing and flossing every day. Gentle cleaning from a dental hygienist will remove any plaque, and prevent tartar from forming.鈥

Dental implants
Even with regular cleaning, tooth decay is still common and many seniors must have teeth removed.
鈥淕aps from missing teeth can lead to bone shrinkage, or allow other teeth to shift, changing the appearance of your smile,鈥 Dr. Basij says. 鈥淒ental implants are a fantastic, permanent solution 鈥 we shape and colour-match the implant to your existing teeth and before long you鈥檒l forget it鈥檚 even there.鈥
With proper care, dental implants can last 20 years or more, and unlike dentures they aren鈥檛 removed. During your free consult session, Dr. Basij will review the condition of your oral health to determine if you are a good candidate for a dental implant.
Sleep apnea and your dentist
If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea or you鈥檙e concerned about having apnea, book a consult session with Dr. Basij to discuss available options that may benefit you.
The most common treatment for sleep apnea is a CPAP Machine, but for those with mild or moderate sleep apnea the CPAP machine and mask may not be your only option.
鈥淲e can create a 3D model of your mouth using the industry鈥檚 most modern 3D scanner, and create a custom oral device, which helps open your airway as you sleep,鈥 Dr. Basij says.
Wearing an oral device, similar to a mouth guard or retainer, can be more comfortable and convenient than a CPAP machine, while still helping you get a good night鈥檚 sleep.
