After a few months of resting at home, Abbotsford cyclists P.L. and Kristen Meindertsma are ready to hit the road again, embarking on the third leg of their years-long journey to raise $2.5 million for charity.
This time, the couple will be covering the entire west coast of South America, cycling more than 10,000km over the course of six months.
Beginning in Bogota, Colombia, this journey traverses altitudes reaching up to 4,750m, which the couple explained is nearly the same height as the Mount Everest base camp.
Embarking on this ride, which they have titled "Fin Del Mundo", will officially take the cyclists past the halfway mark of their five-leg campaign, which began back in 2023.
The two riders explained that they came up with the name for this latest part of the fundraising project because it translates to "end of the world", which they say perfectly describes the journey all the way down to Ushaia, which is the southernmost city in the world.
On each of the expeditions, the couple raises thousands of dollars, contributing to their overall goal of $2.5 million, which is being split among five different charities.
"We have raised $850,000 over the last two years, and we have a goal of $500,000 for this year's ride," Kristen said.
This latest expedition begins mid-June, with the two of them only taking their bikes and what they can reasonably carry with them while traversing the entire length of the continent.
