Another rainbow crosswalk has been vandalized in Abbotsford 鈥 at a local high school.
The Abbotsford News reported on Tuesday (July 9) that the rainbow crosswalk at University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) had large amounts of black and white paint spilled across it.
The vandalism had been discovered by security staff the previous day, and a police report was filed.
After the story was published online, UFV staff were made aware that the rainbow crosswalk at Abbotsford Senior Secondary had also been damaged.
School district spokesperson Kristi Ferguson confirmed on Thursday (July 11) that the Pride symbol had been defaced with markings that appear to be vehicle tires. She said the vandalism occurred around June 20.
She said the crosswalk will be repaired, and the Abbotsford Police Department is investigating the incident.
鈥淪chools are intended to be safe and welcoming spaces for everyone, including our 2SLGBTQ+ community,鈥 Ferguson said.
鈥淲e unequivocally oppose acts of vandalism and aggression and will continue to champion respect, tolerance and kindness.鈥
In June 2022, Abbotsford Senior Secondary became the first school in the district to have a rainbow crosswalk installed.
The UFV crosswalk was created in 2016 near the main entrance to the B building.
