An overnight standoff with an armed man in South Surrey ended peacefully Monday morning, according to .
On Sunday evening, police were called to the 2200-block of 174 Street on an unrelated matter, according to a news release issued Monday morning. At the scene, officers recognized a man as being wanted on various warrants.
When officers approached the residence where the man was located, he refused to come out and police saw what was believed to be a , the release notes. The handgun 鈥渞esulted in a large police presence鈥� in the area, including the Lower Mainland District Integrated Emergency Response Team.
At 7:35 a.m. Monday, the emergency response team entered the home and took a 58-year-old man into custody.
The man, who is known to police, was wanted for the following alleged offences: one count carrying/using/threatening to use a weapon; two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm; one count of mischief, $5,000 or under; one count of uttering threats to kill, poison or injure a person鈥檚 animal or bird.
There were no injuries to either the suspect or officers during the arrest, the RCMP said, and 174 Street remains closed between 20 Avenue and 23 Avenue while the investigation continues.
鈥淭he safety of the public and those involved is always the top priority,鈥� said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann.
鈥淩oads were closed in the area and a police negotiator was used. Police would like to thank the community for their patience and co-operation during this incident.鈥�
Last June, Surrey officers responded to a in the neighbouring area in the 1300-block of 176 Street, after one man was shot. A four-day preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 2018 for 70-year-old Kenneth Turpin.
