Council calls for second look at high density development

More townhouses will add to traffic woes, devalue property, neighbours fear

91原创 Township planners have been ordered to revise a proposed plan that would increase housing density by building multiple-family dwellings in the northeast Gordon Estate neighbourhood of Willoughby, near 72 Avenue and 208 Street.

Councillor Charlie Fox called for a second look, saying the plan 鈥渄id not interface well鈥 with nearby family homes.

Councillor Grant Ward was the only supporter of the existing plan.

The decision follows a public hearing on the plan in April which heard from more than 20 people, most of them against the part of the plan that would build apartments near an existing neighbourhood of single-family homes.

The majority of speakers were worried about the increase in traffic that would result and the effect it would have on the already-limited amount of parking in the area.

Some were concerned the proposal would reduce the value of their properties.

Jay Easton was one of several residents who complained they bought their single family homes expecting that the undeveloped land around them would be used for the same purpose.

Easton said they were told that by the developer.

鈥淲e鈥檝e spent a lot of money to purchase those homes,鈥 Easton said.

鈥淚 am against increasing the density of the neighbourhood.鈥

Mike McDonald was applauded when he said higher-density housing was 鈥渘o good for people.鈥

鈥淚 was born into high density,鈥 McDonald said.

鈥淚t sucks.鈥

One resident said the solution would be to allow taller multiple-family buildings with more parking onsite.

鈥淲e need to go up, not out,鈥 said Ron Armour.

鈥淲e鈥檙e missing the boat if we only build townhouses.鈥
