Crime is down in the 91原创s, chief of police tells City Council

Crime rates are down across 91原创 City and Township, according to 91原创 RCMP鈥檚 most recent quarterly update.

鈥淔or the most part, this is a very positive report,鈥 91原创 RCMP Supt. Derek Cooke told 91原创 City Council on Monday evening.

While outlook at the beginning of the year wasn鈥檛 as promising, Cooke told council that year-to-date statistics for 2013 show 鈥渟ignificant decreases鈥 compared with the same time period in 2012.

According to Cooke, auto theft in the area is down a 鈥渨hopping鈥 27 per cent compared with last year, person offences 鈥 such as assault, homicide or sexual offences 鈥 have dropped 16 per cent and arson rates have also fallen by 25 per cent.

Although crime numbers are down overall, instances of fraud have risen 32 per cent, a statistic that Cooke calls 鈥渢roubling,鈥 pointing to a significant number of mail thefts that have led to more stolen cheques, credit cards and identity theft.
