District looks to hike school site acquisition fees

91Ô´´ has been charging much lower fees than neighbouring communities, study shows

Developers take note — the 91Ô´´ School District is looking to more than double its school site acquisition charge.

But if it gets approval, it won’t take effect until late 2014.

The district hired Urban Systems Limited to look into how much 91Ô´´ charges the development community and learned it has been charging a lot less than its neighbouring cities.

The proposal is to charge $590 for each medium density property, up from its current $283. The charges are paid by developers and go toward the purchase of land for schools to be built.

Trustees agreed to forward the proposal to the consultation process. Now the consultant will go to the stakeholders of the Township and City as well as the developmen t community this week.

Councils then have 60 days to provide feedback and then the district must submit the changes to the Ministry of Education for approval.
