Fire destroys 208 St. home

An abandoned house was set on fire early Monday morning.

An abandoned house deliberately set on fire was likely once used as a grow-op, investigators from the Township fire department believe.

The department received a call at 1:22 a.m. Monday that the house at 3354 208 St. was on fire, and dispatched crews from Brookswood, Murrayville and Willoughby fire halls.

鈥淚t had been a grow-op in the past but there was nothing actually growing at the time of the fire,鈥 said fire department spokesman Bruce Ferguson.

It鈥檚 uncertain if the house was insured; Ferguson pegged the damage at $200,000.

鈥淭he house was destroyed.鈥

Fortis had cut off the gas a few days ago, he said, adding that investigators found evidence of recent destruction in an outbuilding, suggesting that another grow-op was being built.
