Surrey section of Fraser Highway closed to traffic for 7 months

Surrey's new Green Timbers Station will be at 140 Street and Fraser Highway

It's April Fool's Day, but this is no joke for motorists in North Surrey: Starting today (April 1), a section of Fraser Highway will be closed to all traffic for several months due to SkyTrain construction.

From now until the end of October, the busy highway will be blocked between 140 Street and 96 Avenue for work to build Green Timbers Station directly above Fraser Highway.

Drivers should use 96 Avenue as an alternate route.

Crews will be building new utilities to supply power for the future SkyTrain plus roadwork, foundation construction and guideway/station construction.

A full road closure is required, project planners say in a traffic advisory on , with detailed notices in English, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Punjabi and Tagalog.

"The full closure includes vehicle travel lanes, sidewalks and multi-use pathways," the advisory notes.

Also, there will be intermittent overnight closures of Fraser Highway vehicle travel lanes between 96 Avenue and 148 Street. "These intermittent overnight closures (8 p.m. to 5 a.m.) will be in place as required. Vehicles travelling on Fraser Highway will be directed to 96 Avenue via 148 Street. Traffic control and signs will be in place to direct vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians to alternate routes."

Next up eastbound after the existing King George Station, the new Green Timbers Station will be located at 140 Street and Fraser Highway, on the westernmost edge of Green Timbers Urban Forest. The station will facilitate access to Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, the BC RCMP E-Divisional Headquarters and Surrey Memorial Hospital.
